What is a Tooth Extraction?
Brentwood Dentist
Extractions involve completely removing one or more of your natural teeth. This might be because a tooth is loose or severely decayed. You might need an extraction because one or more of your wisdom teeth are impacted. Extractions help to eliminate any pain you’re experiencing while getting rid of a problematic tooth. The procedure can both protect and save your remaining teeth from being further compromised.
Why might a Tooth Extraction be needed?
Dentist Brentwood
Extractions can be done on both adult and pediatric teeth. They are often needed when other treatments have failed or when the tooth poses a problem to your oral health. Some reasons you’d need an extraction include:
• A tooth is severely decayed
• Your tooth is loose
• You’re going to be having a denture fitted
• Your child has a stubborn baby tooth
• You have impacted wisdom teeth
• You want to avoid the expense and work of other procedures
Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
Brentwood Dentist
We can examine your teeth to determine if you’ll need an extraction. Oftentimes, our patients request an extraction in place of other, more invasive procedures. If you need an extraction, we advise having the procedure done sooner rather than later. This prevents the tooth from posing a problem to your oral and dental health.
What happens during the procedure for a Tooth Extraction?
Dentist Brentwood
We will administer either a local anesthetic or general anesthesia. This will depend on your requests during your consultation as well as the type of surgery being done. We then use specialized tools to loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. Sutures may be required to close the gums after the tooth is removed. For impacted teeth, we will create a small incision through the gums to gain access to the underlying tooth. You will be given important aftercare instructions to ensure the surgical site heals properly.
If you’re ready to come in for an extraction or want to know more about the procedure, call us today and we will be happy to further assist you.
